FAQ
Ikkat Handloom Weave & Artistry
Unlike printed imitations, an authentic Handloom Ikkat saree is created using a complex "tie-and-dye" process where the yarns are dyed before they are woven. When you look closely at a Vayati Ikkat, you’ll notice a beautiful, slight "blurriness" at the edges of the patterns. This is the signature of a true hand-woven piece—it’s a sign that a human hand, not a machine, aligned those threads on the loom.
It all comes down to the complexity of the weave. In Single Ikkat, only the warp (vertical) or the weft (horizontal) yarns are dyed. In the rare and prestigious Double Ikkat, both sets of yarns are precisely dyed to meet and form a pattern. At Vayati, our Single Ikkat collection offers a lightweight, breathable drape perfect for daily elegance, while our more intricate weaves are true heritage investments.
Because we use rich, authentic dyes to achieve our vibrant jali and geometric patterns, a tiny bit of "surface color" may release during the very first wash—this is completely normal for genuine hand-dyed textiles. To preserve the soul of your Vayati Ikkat, we recommend a cold hand wash with mild detergent or dry cleaning for the first few cycles.
Choosing Ikkat is a vote for slow fashion. Each saree from our collection supports artisan clusters who use traditional wooden looms that require zero electricity. By purchasing a Vayati Ikkat, you aren't just buying a garment; you are helping preserve a centuries-old craft and choosing a biodegradable, natural fiber that is as kind to the planet as it is to your skin.
A single Ikkat saree can take anywhere from 15 days to several months to complete, depending on the complexity of the design. The process involves careful planning, precise tie-dyeing, and meticulous handloom weaving by skilled artisans.
